If you haven’t heard of Pinterest then you’ve been living under a rock. The ever growing image sharing platform was originally founded in 2009 by a man called Ben Silbermann, with the platform going live as a closed beta in March 2010 and continued to operate in an invite only method until its official launch in 2011. The platform allows its users to save an endless amount of images and categorise them on boards. Users can also follow other users boards and profiles such as most other social media platforms. Some of the most popular categories include; travel, cars, home design and art.
Within only 9 months after the site’s launch, the platform already had 10,000 users, with the launch of an iPhone app version of the image sharing website in early March 2011. The app brought in a lot more than expected number of downloads. Silbermann and a few programmers originally operated the platform from a small apartment until the summer of 2011.
In August 2011, Time magazine listed Pinterest within its ’50 Best Websites’ article, which was a big accomplishment for the team behind Pinterest. Later on in the year, in the month of December, the site became one of the top 10 largest social media network services according to Hitwise data. The site managed to obtain over 11 million total visits per week with its ever extending reach, and was named the best new startup of 2011 by TechCrunch!
ComScore reported in January 2012, that the site had over 11.5 million unique users that were now accessing the site. This made Pinterest one of the fastest sites to break through the 10 million user mark! A few months later in March 2012, Experian Hitwise stated that the site became the third largest social network within the United States within this month and surpassed LinkedIn and Tagged!

On the 10th of August 2012, Pinterest was now open to everyone without the need for a request or invitation. The app which allowed Android and iPad users to access the site was also launched within the same month. The app was customer designed for Android phones and tablets of all cost, size and speed, with the iPad app being described as a revelation for the platform and the best experience for the site yet.
Later that year in October 2012, Pinterest released a new feature that allowed its users to report negative and offensive activity and allowed them to block other users. Pinterest stated that they wanted to keep their community respectful and positive.
Within the same month, business accounts were launched which allowed businesses to have a place within the site and help better set out their profiles.
The history of Pinterest might not be as long as some of the bigger social media giants out there, but it managed to surprise people with how quickly its fanbase grew over a short period of time.
