Do you use Instagram to help market your business/product and have noticed a decrease in engagement from your followers, or have just simply started using the social networking platform? This is not uncommon. I have put together below a short list of tips and tricks to help you gain more engagement and help you bump up those numbers.


Don’t just post your hashtags out willy nilly and hope for the best. Strategically plan each posts hashtags before you send them out to give you the best possible chance of gaining more engagement and possibly a few more followers. Posting your content under relevant hashtags is a way to start. Search similar products/services to what your business is selling, and create a list of possible hashtags that relate to what you do and the content you are wanting to post. For example, if your business is a florist, you would use hashtags such as; #bouquet #flowerarranging and #brightenyourday.

Another thing to be wary of is the fact that Instagram is now penalising accounts for spamming hashtags. Don’t use the same hashtags over and over, mix them up a bit and try out new ones to bypass Instagram’s new reaction to spam content.

Call to Action (CTA)

To help increase your post engagement, try adding a call to action statement into your posts. Get your audience to want to comment on your content and get discussions blooming. For example, you could post something along the lines of ‘What do you think of our new product? Comment below!’ This will inspire your audience to get involved and give their opinion creating you more engagement.

Be Active!

I cannot stress this enough. Like with most other social media platforms, the more active you are, the better! Make sure that you are at the very least, posting once or twice a day onto Instagram to give your existing followers a reason to stay connected to your business and a way to gain more!

Even if you don’t have any content lined up for posting, then you can always turn to Instagram stories. If you are unfamiliar with this tool then it’s time to learn its benefits and how to use it. Looking at your profile picture in the top left-hand corner of your home feed, it should have a tiny plus around its edge. Or you can simply swipe right on the home feed. This will bring up the camera. To add content to your story, you can either take a photo or use an image on your phone which you have taken/saved within the last 24hrs.

There’s another benefit to using Instagram stories as it gives you the chance to have your story posted in the Explorer feed. This will give you more chances at gaining larger engagement as more people are likely to see your content.

Scheduling Posts

Another tip I can strongly back is scheduling your posts. Make sure you schedule your posts around a time you know your target audience is the most active! Instagram’s algorithm gives higher priority to content with higher engagement!


Even-though your post engagement might be falling slightly, it is still possible to save your account. By following the above steps, it will help lighten the load and help you to further boost the engagement you are looking for!
